The creative process: from digital projects to interior design

As the Head of Digital at Article Ten, I oversee the design and delivery of a vast range of digital projects – everything from branding and websites to eLearning and newsletters. While each project has its unique challenges, there’s one constant that binds them together: creativity.

My passion for interior design has had a deep influence on how I approach my work in digital design and project management. While interior design and digital projects may seem worlds apart, the two share a lot in common when it comes to creative processes. Here’s how I see these two worlds colliding, and why an understanding of interior design principles can enhance digital project management.

  1. Understanding the bigger picture

In both digital project management and interior design, the process starts with a vision. Just as an interior designer must consider the functionality, aesthetic, and flow of a space, a digital project manager must ensure that every aspect of a project aligns with the brand’s identity, user needs, and business goals. When overseeing a digital project, I start by working on understanding the audience, the objectives, and the technology required to bring the project to life.

  1. Content & structure matters

Great interior design balances structure and creativity, making a space both visually appealing and practical – just like digital design. Whether crafting a website, app, or eLearning course, layout is key to how users interact with content, which should always guide design decisions. Just as furniture placement influences movement through a room, UX/UI design shapes how users navigate a digital experience, requiring strategic thinking to ensure seamless and intuitive interactions.

  1. The power of aesthetics and branding

A well-designed interior tells a story, just like a well-executed digital project, where colour palettes, typography, imagery, and branding work together to evoke a feeling – much like furniture, textiles, and lighting set the tone of a room. Minimalist interiors with neutral tones create a sense of calm, just as a clean, modern website with simple navigation ensures a seamless user experience. Both disciplines demand a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of how design elements shape perception.

  1. Project management & problem-solving

Every project – whether digital or interior – comes with unexpected challenges, requiring adaptability to overcome constraints like budgets, timelines, or shifting expectations. Strong planning and communication are essential in both fields to keep projects on track, manage stakeholders, and align creative disciplines – all while balancing functionality and aesthetics.

  1. Trends vs. timelessness

Trends come and go, but the best designs – whether digital or interior – stand the test of time. Just as interior designers balance trends with timeless principles, digital creatives must blend innovation with longevity to create intuitive, user-friendly experiences that remain relevant beyond trends.

Ultimately, whether I’m managing a digital project or designing a living space, my approach remains the same: start with a clear vision, focus on user experience, embrace problem-solving, and ensure that aesthetics serve a functional purpose.

The intersection of digital design and interior design reminds me that creativity isn’t limited to one medium – it’s a mindset that applies across disciplines. And at the heart of it all, great design – whether in pixels or physical spaces – is about creating experiences that leave a lasting impact.
